If you have a passion for the history of Bury St Edmunds and are keen to share your enthusiasm with others, then becoming a Green Badge Guide could be the ideal role for you.
The Bury St Edmunds Tourist Information Centre is looking for people to train as tour guides to show visitors the sights and sounds of the town. It takes commitment but the role is very rewarding.
Most of the tours take place between May and September, when a guide is on duty each day at 2.30pm. Guides may also be asked to meet pre-booked groups, so the role is ideal for people who have free time during the day.
Those interested in becoming a Green Badge Guide will undergo a training course. This is part funded by St Edmundsbury and the Awards for All scheme, although students must make a personal contribution of £150.
The course begins in September, with lectures every Thursday evening. Those taking part will also need to dedicate their time to private research before final written and practical exams take place in June 2007. Successful candidates will be awarded a nationally-recognised qualification known as the Green Badge of the Institute of Tourist Guiding.
Further information about the course is available from either Sharon Fairweather or Gill Rogers at the Bury St Edmunds Tourist Information Centre on 01284 764667.
