Archaeology on the move

12 February, 2007

One of the best archaeological collections in the region has gone on show at the West Stow Anglo Saxon Village.

The display has gone on show in the visitor centre. Moving the collection has put the exhibits into a new context, allowing the area’s rural story to be told on a site where people have lived for more than 10,000 years.

As a result of the move, Moyse’s Hall Museum, in the heart of Bury St Edmunds, will now focus on medieval and urban themes. Rehoming the archaeological collections at West Stow also means that space at Moyse’s Hall has been freed up to display some of the borough’s fine and decorative art collections.

Cllr Paul Farmer, St Edmundsbury’s Portfolio Holder for Arts and Culture said:

“I am delighted to see that more of the borough’s archaeology collections are on display at West Stow than was possible at Moyse’s Hall. West Stow is also a site that attracts over 100,000 visitors each year so more people should be able to find out about those who have lived in this area in the past.”

The archaeology displays also form an important part of West Stow’s popular Ring Quest challenge, which takes place this year from Saturday 10 to Sunday 18 February. A special price of £5 per family gives visitors the chance to take part in a Lord of the Rings themed challenge and several of the clues relate to items in the new gallery.
