Bury St Edmunds parish poll arrangements

11 November, 2004

At the Bury St Edmunds town meeting on 1 November a formal request was made for a parish poll to take place. In accordance with the law governing parish polls, the names and addresses of ten Bury St Edmunds electors were submitted to back the call.

The Returning Officer at St Edmundsbury Borough Council, Deborah Cadman, is responsible for administering all elections within the borough, including parish polls, and arrangements have now been made for it to be held on Thursday 2 December. The question to be put to people who are registered to vote within the parish of Bury St Edmunds will be:

"Is the basic design of the Cattle Market Shopping Centre, as submitted by Centros Miller, suitable for Bury St Edmunds?"

That question was accepted at the town meeting on 1 November and, again in line with the electoral law covering parish polls, no changes can be made to its wording once it has been accepted and no further questions can be put to voters for this poll. The law also governs the time that polling stations can open - from 4pm to 9pm only - and does not make any provision for sending out polling cards, postal votes or votes by proxy. Electors will need to vote in person at the polling station in their ward.

There will be 14 polling stations across the town and the count will take place at King Edward VI School after the polls have closed on 2 December, with the result notified to Bury St Edmunds Town Council.
