Two workmen who accepted payment for disposing of building waste and then dumped it in a local beauty spot will be prosecuted at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates Court at 10am on Friday 13 June 2008.
St Edmundsbury Borough Council is prosecuting Ron Heather of Maldon and John Jenkinson from Witham, who have both pleaded guilty to three offences connected with fly tipping. The convictions given are likely to be fines.
In August 2007 the men were working on repairs to a property in Nowton. The schedule of works included a cost of £50.08 for the disposal at an approved site of a cubic metre of waste from a damaged ceiling. Shortly afterwards, the property owner was walking his dogs along Fox and Pin Lane, Nowton and recognised a large canvas bag that had been dumped in the entrance to a bridleway as the one taken from his property days earlier by the builders carrying out his repairs. He also identified blue bags dumped with the canvas bag that originally contained plaster mix.
Cllr Peter Stevens, St Edmundsbury Borough Council Cabinet member for Environment and Transport said,
"Fly tipping is blight. It affects everyone's well being and it is crucial that we act to protect the cleanliness of our beautiful borough. The council has been given powers to do just that and these prosecutions shows how seriously St Edmundsbury takes enforcement."
