St Edmundsbury Borough Council's tourism team swept the board last night at the Archant Tourism in Suffolk awards, winning Best Tourist Information Centre for the Bury St Edmunds TIC and snatching the prize for Best Large Event/Festival for the Bury St Edmunds Christmas Fayre. Tourism Officer Sharon Fairweather was presented with an Outstanding Achievement Award in recognition of her personal contribution to tourism.
Sharon said,
"My team is just thrilled to have done so well. We have a lot of assets in St Edmundsbury, like our heritage and beautiful open spaces. But I think it is the warmth of the welcome we give which makes all the difference. We estimate that the Christmas Fayre is worth £500,000 to Bury St Edmunds, and the magic is down to the goodwill of town traders and the visiting market traders. "
Cllr Sara Mildmay White, St Edmundsbury Borough Council Cabinet member for Tourism said,
Sharon and her team set themselves very high standards and I am delighted that their achievements have been so widely appreciated. Tourism is an important part of the borough's economy, but it also has value to the people who live and work here, knowing that their area is so well thought of. Our wonderful borough has much to offer and we are proud to share it with visitors and hope that they come back again".
