Summer road works planned for St Andrews Street South

10 July, 2008

Enhancements to St Andrews Street South, the road between the historic core of Bury St Edmunds and the new town centre development, mean that it will be closed to traffic from 21 July until November. It will remain open for pedestrians and businesses will be operating as usual throughout the works.

The bus stops in St Andrews Street South will be suspended while the work is going on, and the main town centre stop in the meantime will be the Bus Station in St Andrew’s Street North. Advance notice has been put up in the shelters and displayed on First buses.

The works are a key part of the overall scheme to enhance the town centre. All the surfaces will be replaced using similar styles and materials to Kings Road. New street furniture will be installed and warm white street lighting will be introduced, which is more energy efficient and safer than the current lighting.

Cllr Sara Mildmay-White, Chair of the Bury St Edmunds Working Party said,

“We learned valuable lessons when St Andrews Street South was previously closed, which we will be using to try to minimise disruption to businesses and residents. We will be giving regular updates through our website and the town centre newsletter.”
