Play areas will be upgraded, village halls refurbished and a youth club helped with its rent after St Edmundsbury agreed to award more than £45,000 to a diverse range of community groups.
The council’s Cabinet approved the grants, to nine different schemes, at a meeting last week and the figures were confirmed today. Those to benefit are:
· Bury St Edmunds Concert Club – awarded £500 to help the club promote culture and classical music throughout the borough;
· Kedington and District branch of the Royal British Legion – given a £2500 grant towards the purchase and installation of new heaters;
· Pakenham Village Hall and Playing Fields Association – awarded £5000 towards a new play area;
· Culford Village Hall Committee - £9000 given towards a new extension;
· Hundon Village Hall and Playing Fields Committee – awarded £3913 towards a new kitchen;
· Lidgate Village Hall Management Committee – given a £20,000 grant towards the modernisation and refurbishment of the village hall;
· Great Thurlow Parish Council – handed £2834 towards upgrading equipment and installing new fencing in the village’s play area;
· Optua (formerly Rethink Disability) Leisure Services – awarded £1000 towards staging an Optua showcase day in Spring 2007, which gives disabled people the chance to try out Paralympic sports;
· Manic Monday Youth Club (based on the Howard Estate in Bury St Edmunds) – given £420 towards rent and insurance costs.
Cllr Sara Mildmay-White, Deputy Leader at St Edmundsbury and Portfolio Holder for Resources and Community Development, said:
“We offer financial support to a huge variety of community groups and voluntary organisations across the borough. The money we award often makes an enormous difference and can be used towards the cost of anything from refurbishing village halls to staging classical music concerts.”
