‘TEAM ST EDMUNDSBURY’ RECEIVE PRAISE FOR ACHIEVEMENTS

9 July, 2004

Photo opportunity: Tuesday 13 July at 5.30pm, Lesley Cowie, Sports Development Manager at St Edmundsbury Borough Council and Alison Bowyer, Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre Manager, will join Melanie Banks, Director of John Banks Group Bury St Edmunds for a presentation evening for ‘Team St Edmundsbury’ hosted by John Banks Group at their showroom on Kempson Way, Bury St Edmunds.

Over 100 young people representing ‘Team St Edmundsbury’ will be recognised for their determination and enthusiasm at the annual Suffolk Youth Games at a special presentation being hosted by John Banks Group in Bury St Edmunds on Tuesday 13 July.

Despite the torrential rain at this year’s event, which took place on Sunday 4 July in Ipswich, Team St Edmundsbury remained in high spirits throughout the day and went on to win a number of well-deserved awards in the various sports in which they competed. In total Team St Edmundsbury scooped six awards; gold for athletics, girls’ basketball and boys’ basketball, silver for girls’ football and bronze for girls’ hockey and mixed tag rugby.

Team St Edmundsbury joined over 900 young people from across Suffolk to take part in what is known as the biggest multi-sport event for young people in the county. This year Team St Edmundsbury was sponsored by John Banks Group Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich, and Sportsmatch. Training sessions for those competing took place in the run up to the event at Haverhill and Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centres and were organised by leisure services staff from St Edmundsbury Borough Council.

Cllr Terry Clements, St Edmundsbury Cabinet member for Sport and Leisure said:

“Well done to all those who took part in the event, you’ve done yourselves and the borough proud. The support of the sponsors has enabled us to provide more opportunities for coaching and this has clearly benefited the young people who took part. It also complements the work that is done at our Leisure Centres, at schools and local clubs with the Active Sports Programme.”

Members of Team St Edmundsbury will be presented with certificates by John Banks Group on Tuesday 13 July for their achievements in this year’s Suffolk Youth Games.
