STILL TIME TO SEND IN YOUR VIEWS ON FAIRTRADE

9 July, 2004

People throughout the borough still have time to submit their views on whether they think St Edmundsbury should become a Fairtrade Borough.

Following a presentation to Cabinet earlier this year, a request was made that St Edmundsbury should support the idea by buying Fairtrade products for use within the council and support Fairtrade initiatives throughout the borough. Before making any decision, councillors want to know what the community thinks and it was decided that the matter should be referred back to the Policy Development Committee for further study and consultation. They will be investigating the issues before making any recommendation.

People have until Wednesday 21 July, the date of the Policy Development Committee, to send in their views about St Edmundsbury becoming a Fairtrade Borough. This can be done by completing the Fairtrade coupon in the June issue of Community Spirit. Alternatively, send comments directly to Adriana Shooter, Scrutiny Manager at St Edmundsbury Borough Council at Adriana.Shooter@stedsbc.gov.uk, telephone 01284 757613 or fax 01284 757125. Anyone who has not received their copy of Community Spirit should contact Maria Ethridge in the Communications Unit at St Edmundsbury Borough Council on 01284 757033 or email maria.ethridge@stedsbc.gov.uk.

Once the Policy Development Committee has reviewed all the responses it will make recommendations to Cabinet and if these are accepted full Council will make a final decision.  If the recommendation made by Policy Development Committee is positive, people will be able to submit their views right up until consideration by full Council. St Edmundsbury Borough Councillors will also be listening to the views of their communities right up until a decision is taken on whether St Edmundsbury becomes a Fairtrade Borough.
