Unique homes take shape

9 June, 2006

The protective scaffolding has been removed and the historic West Front building is now well on its way to becoming some of the most sought-after homes in Bury St Edmunds.

Structural and external works on the Grade I listed building are complete and work on the interiors is about to begin. One property is already nearing completion and should be ready for its new owners by late September, while the remainder should be finished next year.

The Hawes and Southgate development team working on the project have been carefully preserving the unique and historic qualities of the West Front while converting the building into homes with all the modern comforts. Work has included conserving the medieval remains of the flint core belonging to an 11th century Benedictine Abbey, onto which 17th and 18th century timber-framed houses and some early 19th century structures were built.

Cllr John Griffiths, Council Leader, said:

“St Edmundsbury’s councillors and officers alike have worked very hard over several years to bring the restoration of the West Front to fruition and we are delighted with the progress Hawes and Southgate have made.”

Cllr Sara Mildmay-White, joint Deputy Leader of the Council who has been involved with the project throughout, said:

“This is an incredibly unique project which celebrates our rich heritage while also looking to the future. The West Front building is one of the most spectacular in Bury St Edmunds, which is why we have been so keen to see this vital restoration scheme take place.”

Walter Hawes, from developers Hawes and Southgate, said:

“Everyone involved in this project is delighted with the progress that has been made and it is wonderful for the West Front to be on view to the townsfolk of Bury St Edmunds once again.”
