The perception that addiction is self-inflicted will be exploded in a community-based arts project which challenges myths about drug and alcohol problems.
“A right bunch of artheads” is a free, two-day substance misuse art show from 10am to 5pm on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 January, at the Athenaeum in Bury St Edmunds. It will exhibit work by people who have themselves been affected by drugs or alcohol and also many other sections of the community who want to comment on the issues. The main thrust of this project is to show that people can change, recover and contribute to society in a positive way.
A live concert will be held on the evening of the Friday 11 January, also at the Athenaeum. The performers all have strong links with issues surrounding drugs and alcohol, many are themselves in recovery.
The compelling content recently won double the funding applied for in a regional Dragons’ Den style competition.
The partners involved include, St Edmundsbury Borough Council, West Suffolk College, Focus12 drug treatment centre, West Suffolk Mind, Newmarket Racing Partnership and connexions.
