Exhibition of school art for Cattle Market hoardings

9 January, 2007

Colourful and imaginative artwork from school and college students of all ages throughout Bury St Edmunds designed to go on the hoardings around the Cattle Market redevelopment site will be on show to the public next week.

The free exhibition is being staged in the foyer of the Athenaeum on Angel Hill, Bury St Edmunds, on 16 and 17 January, from 9am to 5pm. Schools have been invited to visit with the children who contributed to the art project and members of the public can also call in to admire the imagination and skills of the young artists.

The project started last year when primary, middle and upper schools and WestSuffolkCollege were invited to design art panels for display on the hoardings. There was a tremendous response, with 13 taking part. Each was supplied with information, such as the history of Bury St Edmunds and the cattle market, tourism, shopping and the town's market charters. Using this as background research they then had a free rein to come up with art suitable for brightening up the hoardings.

There were so many art panels sent in by schools that it will not be possible to put all of them on the hoardings, but over the two years the developer, Centros Miller, hopes to put as many as possible up in rotation. Others will go on show in various locations - the Cathedral, for example, is looking to put some on display. And all of them can now be seen on the town centre development website www.moreheart.info
