Shovel it yourself!

8 May, 2007

To celebrate national compost awareness week, St Edmundsbury Borough Council will be thanking residents for their recycling efforts by giving away free compost.

The good quality soil-improver is made from recycled garden waste collected at Coupals Close and Rougham Hill household waste recycling centres. Residents are invited to bring a spade and a container to Rougham Hill on Saturday 12 May from 10am to 3pm to help themselves for free, subject to availability.

The giveaway is part of a country-wide initiative to encourage home composting. The drive also includes giving residents the chance to buy compost bins at vastly reduced prices.

The compost, provided by Viridor Waste Management, also shows what happens to garden waste which is taken to local household waste recycling centres, and allows people to experience the benefits which compost can have in their gardens. The aim of the initiative is to show residents what recycled compost can look and feel like whilst at the same time demonstrating how easy it is to make compost at home.

Throughout the year, residents will be able to buy a 220 litre compost bin for £8, a 330 litre bin for £10 or a 250 litre KOMP compost bin for £20, all including delivery. And anyone who places an order for a home compost bin between the 6– 12 May could be in with the chance of winning of £100 of garden centre vouchers, which have been donated by DHL, the logistics company which delivers the bins. Check out the website www.recyclenow.com/compost or phone 0845 077 0757for more details.

Note to editors:

  1. St Edmundsbury Borough Council is working in partnership with WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme) and Suffolk County Council to promote home composting by providing subsidised compost bins to residents throughout 2007. This helps to minimise landfill, reduce carbon emissions and improve our environment.

  1. Residents are reminded that this is a ‘Shovel it Yourself’ event. Staff are on-hand to provide information and advice on home composting only and not to assist in loading and lifting the soil improver.
