Borough planners win top awards

8 April, 2009

St Edmundsbury Borough Council has been awarded the top places in the Eastern Region Royal Town Planning Institute Awards for Planning Achievement in 2008/9:

The first place was awarded for the restoration of the West Front of the Abbey and the second place was taken for the Station Hill/Tayfen Road and North West Haverhill concept statements.

A trophy and certificates will be presented to recognise these achievements.
Bury St Edmunds Abbey was among the most important medieval monasteries in England, but the ruined Norman West Front had become a Building at Risk and a major project was required to make it habitable. St Edmundsbury Borough Council, who owned the grade one listed national monument, coordinated a ‘dream team’ of skilled practitioners to make five new homes. The work was completed on time and under budget.

The concept statements for North West Haverhill and for the Tayfen Road / Station Hill area of Bury St Edmunds provide a vision and an essential framework for developers to follow. They protect the quality of life and balance the old with the new.

Cllr Terry Clements, St Edmundsbury Borough Council Cabinet member for Planning said,
“These awards reflect the challenge for borough planners. On the one hand we have a unique heritage going back to Norman times, while on the other we need to find thousands of new homes and their supporting infrastructure. I am delighted that the quality of our planning work has been recognised and I congratulate all those involved”
