St Edmund is to be commemorated in a specially designed floral display in the world-famous Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds, ready for St Edmund's Day on 20 November.
The display is in a prime position close to the Abbey Gate and includes three beds surrounding a fountain. The design is a large golden crown on a blue background planted in 260 polyanthus, 450 daisies and 450 pansies, which will mature over the winter, lasting until May next year.
Cllr Lynsey Alexander, portfolio holder for culture and sport said:
"St Edmund has always been an important figure for the borough council - indeed, the crown and arrows associated with him form part of our civic insignia, so it is pleasing to see that interest in what he represents is growing further afield. It is splendid to see the crown reproduced in this skilful scheme. It will be seen by the hundreds of thousands of visitors who come to the Abbey Gardens over the winter months and may prompt a thought about his part in our history."
The winter bedding schemes are as detailed as those planted in summer. Some 12,000 plants are bedded out in the Abbey Gardens alone.
