Two opportunities to find out more about Bury St Edmunds during medieval times and the town's links to the Magna Carta are available during the week of Celebrating Freedom and Democracy events.
On Sunday 13 June, at 7.30pm, Professor Nicholas Vincent, Professor of Medieval History at the University of East Anglia, will give a lecture entitled Magna Carta: The Bury St Edmunds Connection at the Athenaeum on Angel Hill.
Then on Wednesday 16 June, local historian Clive Paine will talk about Bury St Edmunds and Beyond in the Era of Magna Carta, also at the Athenaeum at 7.30pm.
Tickets for the lectures, which are organised in partnership between Bury St Edmunds Town Council and St Edmundsbury Borough Council, cost £2, or £1 concessions, and are available on the door, or from the Tourist Information Centre, Angel Hill (telephone 01284 764667) or Moyse's Hall Museum, Cornhill, Bury St Edmunds (telephone 01284 706183).
The lectures are part of a week-long celebration of the town's links to Magna Carta - Bury St Edmunds is one of five towns which take it in turns every three years to host Magna Carta events (the last time here was in 1989). A Magna Carta Celebration Service, which is open to the public, is also being held at St Edmundsbury Cathedral on Sunday 13 June, at 3.30pm.
