People with an eye to the future are being invited to help St Edmundsbury build for the future by taking part in the Vision 2025 consultation.
And young people are being offered the chance to win £100 of vouchers for their school or youth organisation from Ottakar's book shop by coming up with ideas about what their future will look like.
Organisations throughout the borough have already taken part in two roundtable events, in Haverhill and Bury St Edmunds, and they have come up with ideas about what the future will be like in 20 years' time. Now a Vision 2025 document has been drawn up, based on ideas from these meetings, which outlines what people say the council and our partners need to do in the coming years to achieve those visionary ideas.
Cllr John Griffiths, St Edmundsbury Borough Council Leader, said:
"Major trends are bound to affect us and we need to be ready for them. We are looking forward to working with our partners towards common goals to make sure that the future of the borough looks bright for everyone who lives and works here."
We are now asking anyone with an interest in the shape of things to come to take a look at this document and send in their comments. Copies of the consultation document, and competition pack, are available by emailing vision2025@stedsbc.gov.uk or phoning 01284 757611. Comments can also be made online by visiting our website: www.stedmundsbury.gov.uk
And as it's our current generation of young people who have the greatest stake in the future we are asking them to send in their ideas. Ideas they could tackle include what they think their schools may be like in the future, where they are going to live, what's going to happen to the environment, or perhaps what entertainment or technology will be around in 20 years' time.
The winner will get £100 of Ottakar's vouchers for their school, college or youth group (which could include Scouts and Guides, Sunday schools, majorette troupes, sports teams, dance clubs and so on). Ottakar's book shop in Bury St Edmunds will also be staging a Vision 2025 display from 12 September and inviting young people to enter the competition at its shop. Entries can also be sent direct to St Edmundsbury by applying for a competition pack or picking one up from council offices in Haverhill or Bury St Edmunds - the competition opens on 12 September and closes on 12 October. Displays of the ideas sent in will be staged during Local Democracy Week, starting on 17 October, in both towns.
Mary McIntosh, Bury St Edmunds Ottakar's store manager, said:
‘Ottakar’s is delighted to be part of Vision 2025 and we look forward to seeing lots of young people in the store with their ideas for the future.’
Information about Vision 2025 and the next stages, which includes formal adoption by the full council in December, is also available in the new edition of Community Spirit, St Edmundsbury's magazine which is being distributed now.
