Gardeners’ master class in the Abbey Gardens

6 May, 2008

A gardener’s dream team will be holding a gardening clinic in the internationally renowned Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds from 10am to 12.30pm this Friday, 9 May, including composting consultations.

Visitors to the gardens can pose their questions on anything vegetable, floral or compostable to the team of experts, including Steve Burgess, Head Gardener of the Abbey Gardens, two master composters and a representative from the Allotments Association. There will be a display of different composting techniques and samples to show the results.

The event is being held by St Edmundsbury Borough Council as part of National Compost Awareness Week and the team will also be handing out information on how to obtain discounted composter bins. Anyone living in Suffolk who orders a bin between 4 and 10 May has the chance of winning £50 of garden centre vouchers. The bins cost £17 for a 220 litre size, £20 for 330 litres, and £40 for the 250 litre KOMP bin, all including delivery.

Free soil improver is available at a ‘shovel-it-yourself’ event, being held from 8am on Saturday 10 May at Rougham Hill Household Waste Recycling Centre in Bury St Edmunds. This high nutrient material is made from the contents of the borough’s brown bins and it is used commercially on golf courses, in landscaping and on fields. It is sterile, sweet smelling and excellent for improving soil structure. You need to bring your own bags and shovels.
