Photo opportunity: 11.30am Monday 9 May, launch of new short term accommodation for people who are homeless – 12-15 and 20 Cullum Road, Bury St Edmunds.
Five run-down terraced properties on Cullum Road have been brought back to life to provide short term housing for those who are homeless, thanks to a joint scheme between St Edmundsbury Borough Council and Orwell Housing Association.
St Edmundsbury bought the properties from Suffolk County Council and worked with Orwell Housing Association to transform them into real homes - five two bedroom homes for people who are homeless, who may otherwise face staying in bed and breakfast accommodation while we find permanent homes for them.
The scheme cost St Edmundsbury £485,000 to buy the properties with all the renovations being carried out by Orwell Housing.
Stephen Javes, Chief Executive of Orwell Housing Association, said:
“Orwell Housing is proud to be working with St Edmundsbury Borough Council on this initiative. We saw that the terraced houses had the potential of providing good quality housing for the future but only after undergoing a complete programme of refurbishment. By combining the skills and finances of both organisations we have ensured that homeless people in St Edmundsbury will be provided with excellent temporary accommodation whilst their future permanent needs are assessed."
Councillor Frank Warby, Portfolio Holder for Housing, Health and Crime said:
“Bringing these empty properties back into use is a good example of excellent partnership working and adds to a long list of successful housing development schemes brought forward as a result of close working between the council and Orwell Housing Association.”
The properties will be managed and maintained by Orwell Housing Association on behalf of St Edmundsbury.
