St Edmundsbury Borough Council Leader, Cllr John Griffiths, today announced he is welcoming a new councillor to the Cabinet. Cllr Paul Farmer (Conservative) will be responsible for the arts and culture portfolio, formerly held by the late Cllr Andrew Varley.
Cllr Griffiths said:
"Paul is a terrifically hard-working member of this council. He has shown courage in tackling potentially controversial issues where a great deal of common sense and intelligence is needed to balance the needs of his ward with the needs of the borough as a whole. Bringing him on to the Cabinet will mean he can use that experience in a wider field and I am sure he will make a great success of this new challenge. I look forward to welcoming him to his first Cabinet meeting."
Cllr Farmer has been involved in music all his life, performing in such diverse venues as The Queen Elizabeth Hall on London’s South Bank, BBC Radio 2’s Sunday Half Hour, and even Harriet’s Tea Rooms in Bury St Edmunds. After graduating from The Royal College of Music, he taught in secondary schools before becoming Headmaster of a large mixed comprehensive in South London. He is the author of several music education books. Elected as member for the Bury town centre ward of Abbeygate in 2003, Cllr Farmer has since been active in many local issues.
Speaking after his appointment he said:
“I am delighted to be able to play a greater role in the Council, but will continue to be involved with my work in Abbeygate ward.”
