Multiplex cinema wins backing

5 April, 2007

St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s Development Control Committee has today approved exciting plans to build a multiplex cinema and restaurant scheme in Haverhill.

Permission was granted for a five-screen cinema, three restaurants, a drive-through and a new public square to be created on land next to the leisure centre in Ehringshausen Way.

Developer Citygrove Securities Plc, which has been working with the council to bring forward the project, will now appoint a contractor to build the £9million complex. It is hoped work will start in late May, with the 17,500 sq ft cinema ready to open early next year.

When work is complete, the multiplex will seat between 900 and 980 people and will be run by leading UK operators Cineworld.

During construction, measures will be put in place to protect the 12 elm trees outside the leisure centre. A condition has also been added to the planning consent to safeguard the elms still further.
