Housing providers working with St Edmundsbury Borough Council have successfully secured £3.5 million for 161 new affordable homes to be built over the next three years – while another 74 are also in the pipeline.
St Edmundsbury Borough Council is a strategic housing authority, which determines housing need and then works with Registered Social Landlords, (who build the homes), to bring schemes forward for Housing Corporation funding. The £3.5m allocation from the Housing Corporation, announced last week, will be used to complete new housing schemes throughout St Edmundsbury which will be delivered within the next two to three years.
Work on preparing another seven schemes, which would provide a further 74 units, is continuing. These additional schemes include sites at Northgate Street, Bury St Edmunds, Chalkstone Way Haverhill and the Merry Go Round pub at St Olave's precinct.
Cllr Nigel Aitkens, Deputy Leader, said:
"We are absolutely delighted to have assured funding for 161 new affordable homes in the borough. Current house prices mean that these new homes are essential to meet housing need. The further seven schemes which will bring forward another 74 homes in the borough are a priority for both St Edmundsbury and our housing partners and we will be working hard together to make sure that they are delivered."
St Edmundsbury's Overview and Scrutiny Committee will be updated on affordable housing at their meeting on 6 March.
