Two special remembrance services paying tribute to servicemen who have lost their lives through war and conflict are to take place in Bury St Edmunds this weekend (8 and 9 November).
On Saturday (8 November), Cllr Bob Cockle, Mayor of St Edmundsbury, and the Royal British Legion will lead a procession from the Borough Offices to the Appleby Rose Garden in the Abbey Gardens for a wreath-laying ceremony and short service. The service, which takes place at 2.30pm, will specifically remember the 95th Bombardment Group and those who lost their lives on the beaches of Dunkirk.
On Sunday (9 November), a civic procession and Remembrance Day service will take place at the war memorial on Angel Hill. A two-minute silence will be held at 11am, followed by a flypast of Apache helicopters from RAF Wattisham. There will then be a parade and march past with the salute taken by the Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk and a civic procession to St Mary’s Church, where the service of remembrance will be held.
Cllr Cockle, Mayor of St Edmundsbury, said:
“On behalf of St Edmundsbury Borough Council, I wish to extend an invitation to everyone to join us at these special services during the weekend when we will be gathering to remember those who have lost their lives during wars and paying tribute to their bravery and the personal sacrifice they made for their country.”
