Helping hand with home security

4 September, 2006

A vital scheme to improve security at residents’ homes is to be highlighted by Council Leader John Griffiths and Cabinet member Jeremy Farthing when they visit a couple who have benefited after receiving a grant from St Edmundsbury.

Cllr Griffiths and Cllr Farthing, Portfolio Holder for Safe, Sustainable Communities and Environment will take David Ruffley, MP for Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket, to watch locksmith Colin Saville at work at the home of James and Ruby Pierce.

Security at the couple’s home has been improved after they received a home security grant under the council’s Healthy Homes Scheme. The grant covers 100% of the cost of installing better locks, door chains, window locks and shed locks and is available to residents receiving income or disability related benefit.

Once a grant has been received, the council’s approved locksmith Colin Saville will visit the person’s house and decide what extra security measures are needed to meet a minimum standard set out by the police.

Cllr Jeremy Farthing said:

“This scheme not only helps to improve the security of people’s homes but also offers valuable peace of mind. The borough is already a very safe place to live and initiatives like this underline St Edmundsbury’s commitment to making it even safer.”

Anyone who would more information about the grant should contact the council’s Environmental Health and Housing Department on 01284 757053.
