Plane trees to be re-pollarded in Bury St Edmunds

3 November, 2004

A number of plane trees lining Fornham Road, Out Northgate, Norfolk Road and Northgate Avenue in Bury St Edmunds are to be re-pollarded so their life can be extended.

The pollarding, which involves cutting off branches to encourage the growth of new young branches, will be done as a precautionary measure. Some of the trees have re-grown considerably since they were last done and there is presence of decay in some of the old pruning points. The trees will be re-pollarded over several years and work will start on Monday 8 November on those trees that are in most need.

Arboricultural Officer at St Edmundsbury Borough Council, Nigel Turnbull, explained that the trees will look very bare following the work but they will shoot again quite vigorously next year with fresh green foliage expected in spring.
