Blooming marvellous!

3 October, 2007

A prized award handed to Bury St Edmunds in recognition of its renowned floral displays has been added to the town’s trophy cabinet following another success at the national In Bloom competition.

The town picked up a silver-gilt trophy for the best large town/ small city at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom ceremony, held on Wednesday at Coventry Cathedral.

Judges who visited Bury said they were particularly impressed “with the colourful and well maintained display within the town square area (Angel Hill)” and “with good tree planting leading to and within new housing developments”.

Cllr Lynsey Alexander, St Edmundsbury’s Cabinet member with responsibility for parks, said:

“Staff from the borough council, along with representatives from a variety of other organisations in the town, work extremely hard to ensure Bury remains blooming year after year. I am delighted the Bury in Bloom partnership has won this award in recognition of those efforts. It proves once more that the floral displays which are so highly regarded within the town are also greatly appreciated further afield.”

Bury in Bloom co-chair, Jo Ellen Grzyb said:

“It's wonderful to be able to say that once again we are truly Britain's floral town. Our partnership with the borough and their superb expertise has made our campaign such a successful one this year. Both the Britain and Anglia in Bloom judges were all hugely complimentary of the cleanliness of the town, the outstanding recycling centre, the quality of the street furniture, as well as the depth of community involvement. With this winning partnership we can achieve great things for Bury in the years ahead!"
