‘WOS UP’ youth project out and about in villages

3 September, 2008

Photo opportunity: 7pm Thursday 4 September at the community centre, Kedington. Around 20 young people from Kedington will be joining the 'WOS UP' team and their Warrior youth truck for sport, music and free internet access.

The WOS UP Warrior truck, taking entertainment and activities to young people in St Edmundsbury's villages this summer and autumn, has gathered an enthusiastic following of 13 to 20 year old users since it hit the road four weeks ago.

The big black Mitsubishi truck is a self-contained youth activities centre, carrying all kinds of equipment. As well as loads of sports kit, it powers a music system, laptops and provides free internet access. The team of youth workers who arrive with the vehicle ask the local young people about the things they want to do and deliver accordingly.

St Edmundsbury Borough Council introduced the WOS UP sessions to replace a mobile skate park, which had proved difficult to operate. Generally held in the evenings, the sessions will run until the end of October. Although the truck is a regular visitor to larger villages such as Stanton, Barrow, Great Barton, Ixworth and Kedington, it is ready and willing to go anywhere it is invited.

Project Coordinator, Karl Huggins, from Supporting Contemporary Adolescents said

"The project has got off to a fantastic start, attracting a lot of attention from a wide range of young people of all ages from the beginning. They are using the sports equipment and internet access in particular, and asking us for information on drugs and alcohol. We feel that the service we are delivering is being really effective."
