Kings Road in Bury St Edmunds is open for business after a 12 week closure for a £167,000 make over. It will be officially re-opened at 3pm Tuesday 8 July by the Council’s Portfolio Holder for Transport and Planning using the new contra-flow cycle route.
Kings Road is an important route to the west for the inner town centre traffic and an integral part of the new town centre development. Wide consultation highlighted the need for better provision for pedestrians and cyclists, for reducing the impact of motor vehicles and for an enhanced shopping environment to link through to the Robert Boby Way retail units.
Cllr Terry Clements, St Edmundsbury Borough Council Cabinet member for Transport and Planning said,
“This scheme was delivered on time and to budget. It is very people friendly, with much wider pavements and two-way cycle paths and it has been designed to the highest safety and quality standards. Having borne with us while the work was going on, we hope that Kings Road businesses will see a lift in trade as people return and enjoy the area.”
Funding was shared, with St Edmundsbury contributing £72,000 from the capital allocation for public realm works around the cattle market development and the balance coming from Suffolk County Council.
