The Poll for the Parish of Bury St Edmunds held today asked for votes for and against the question:
"Is the basic design of the Cattle Market Shopping
Centre, as submitted by Centros Miller, suitable for
Bury St Edmunds?"
The result is:
For the question (“Yes” votes) 354
Against the question (“No” votes) 1611
The majority For/Against the question is 1257
There are 27,937 people registered to vote in Bury St Edmunds. The turnout was 7.05% (1970 electors). As required by the Parish Poll Rules 1987 the result of this poll will be notified to Bury St Edmunds Town Council.
The poll was held following a town meeting in Bury St Edmunds on 1 November when a formal request was made for a parish poll to take place. In accordance with the law governing parish polls, the names and addresses of ten Bury St Edmunds electors were submitted to back the call. There were 14 polling stations across the town, with the count taking place at King Edward VI School. The parish poll was run in accordance with the law covering such elections, which meant polling stations opened from 4pm to 9pm and electors had to vote in person at the polling station in their ward. St Edmundsbury Borough Council appoints a Returning Officer (Deborah Cadman) for the borough who is responsible for running elections, from parish polls to general elections.
