Abbey Gardens nominated best park in East Anglia

2 September, 2005

Members of the public have been saying what they think about our parks as part of a national competition and have nominated the Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds the best park in East Anglia.

Britain’s Best Park 2005 is sponsored by Briggs and Stratton and organised in partnership with The Sun newspaper, Horticulture Week and Garden News magazines with people nominating for their favourite parks.

The Abbey Gardens is now in the running to be crowned the best park in the United Kingdom when the overall winner is announced on Tuesday 6 September. The stunning public gardens which surround the ruins of the Abbey have an international prize-winning record with bedding displays setting the tone for the annual Bury in Bloom campaign. Apart from the floral displays, the gardens include aviaries, children's play area, historic Abbey ruins, a sensory garden, bowling green, putting green, tea room, ice cream kiosk, award-winning public toilets and a riverside walk leading towards a local nature reserve.

The overall winner of the competition will receive £3000 worth of commercial lawn maintenance equipment and the opportunity to go forward to the European competition.
