Call for veterans to be part of Freedom ceremony

2 August, 2005

We’re inviting all veterans who live in the borough and served with the Allied Powers during World War II to be part of a special Freedom ceremony taking place this month.

St Edmundsbury will give the honorary Freedom to all those who fought for freedom who now live in the borough, at the Rougham Air Display on Sunday 21 August.  After the ceremonial event, which recognises the contribution the veterans made from 1939 to 1945, there will be the opportunity for veterans to enjoy a dedicated hospitality area and everyone can enjoy the entertainments the air display offers. Among them will be a display of historical and classic aircraft, including those flown by the Battle of Britain heroes, the Hurricane and Spitfire. As part of the event all veterans will receive a Freedom scroll, which is also available afterwards.

We’ve been working with a number of veterans groups and associations to ensure that as many people as possible are part of this special event. However, we’re also keen to hear from World War II veterans who may not be part of a veteran organisation who would like to take part in the honorary freedom award.

Each veteran and their guest will have free entry to the event, everyone else will be need to pay the entrance fee for the air display which will be a great day out for all the family. It’s a fantastic opportunity to see the freedom awarded to those who fought during World War II, as well as a chance to say thank you by being there and showing your support.

If you are a veteran and would like to attend this ceremonial event, please contact Jenny Bradin on 01284 757135, no later than Friday 12 August, and we’d be pleased to send you an invitation in the post.
