Safe and secure at the multistory

2 March, 2007

Drivers can park with confidence at the multi-storey in Bury St Edmunds after the car park was handed a prestigious award in recognition of its high standards of safety.

The multi-storey, on the Parkway, has been given the Park Mark Safer Parking award for the second year running after the CCTV system was upgraded. This work comes after lighting at the car park was improved during the previous year. The award recognises that St Edmundsbury, which runs the car park, has put in measures to create a safe environment and reduce crime and the fear of crime at the site.

The Park Mark Safer Parking award is an initiative run by the British Parking Association and backed by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO). The award is given to car parks which have been assessed by specially-trained police officers and meet high safety standards.

Cllr Terry Clements, Portfolio Holder for Planning, Transport and Leisure, said:

“Tackling the fear of crime is almost as vital as tackling crime itself, so ensuring that people feel safe and secure as they go about their everyday lives is essential. Winning this award for the second year running shows we take the safety of our residents and visitors, along with their vehicles, very seriously.”

Bury Town Inspector Ady Calton said:

"This is an excellent example of partnership working in Bury St Edmunds and I welcome any measures which help residents and visitors to the town feel safer. The lights and CCTV will help to reduce crime, and this car park is an excellent example for other towns to follow."
