An innovative art exhibition featuring work created by people who have experienced problems with drink and drugs will open to the public next week.
The show, called ‘A right bunch of art heads’, has been funded by the Western Suffolk Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership. Paintings, photography, poetry, film, jewellery, live music, installations and a non-alcoholic cocktail bar will all be included in the exhibition, and visitors can take part themselves by producing their own ‘shield of hope’.
It is hoped the show will help inform and improve understanding of drug and alcohol problems while also involving people in a positive project which will raise awareness of the recovery process. The exhibition will be fun while also carrying a serious message.
Jacques B, who is in recovery, is exhibiting his work in the show. The 33-year-old said:
“During my addiction I used painting as a way of isolating and recording my negative thoughts and emotion. Now in recovery I am finding the opposite is true.”
There will also be an information stall at the exhibition, giving people advice on where to get help, while workshops organised by the drug and alcohol action team will also take place. The show brings together many different agencies which work both directly and indirectly with people who have drug or alcohol problems.
The show has been organised by the Substance Misuse Implementation Team and takes place at the Athenaeum on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 January. It is open from 9am to 5pm on both days and admission is free.
