Photo opportunity: 7 August 4.30pm – First roaming youth facility in action at the Recreation Ground, Barrow, near Bury St Edmunds
Young people in rural areas will be able to get together at a roaming youth facility which will be touring the villages of St Edmundsbury this summer in response to demand from texts.
The project, called Wos Up, is being run from a 4 x 4 pick up truck packed with sports equipment and lap tops with free internet access. Activities will include basketball, football, rounders, tennis and arts workshops and information will also be available on drugs, alcohol and sexual health. The scheme is funded by St Edmundsbury Borough Council and will be run by professional youth workers in partnership with a local youth agency SCA (Supporting Contemporary Adolescence). The first session will take place at the Recreation Ground in Barrow on 7 August at 4.30pm and is aimed at young people aged 13 and over.
Leaflets have been distributed around local villages to promote the project and circulate the number that people can text to register their mobile number and village. Then when the truck is going to be in their area, they will receive a text to let them know where and when. Thirty sessions have been commissioned and their location will be in response to demand from the young people themselves.
Sara Mildmay-White, Cabinet member responsible for community projects, says: “This is a new way of working for St Edmundsbury and we look forward to enabling young people in rural areas to enjoy activities not normally available in our villages. The texting idea means we can go wherever people want us and as the whole scheme is mobile we can be totally flexible to respond to demand.”
