People who are elderly or disabled are invited to a special day of hassle-free Christmas shopping in Bury St Edmunds on Sunday 27 November.
The scheme is known as Buddy Day and people are assigned a volunteer ‘buddy’ to care for them. Buddies will push wheelchairs, guide people, carry shopping and generally accompany anyone who needs a helping hand. Dial-A-Ride buses are laid on to take people into town and Shopmobility will be loaning out scooters to those who need them. The shops make a real effort to give a particularly warm welcome to their visitors and some even offer special promotions.
The event is being organised with the help of the Volunteer Centre, Chamber of Commerce, British Red Cross and St Edmundsbury Borough Council. The aim of Buddy Day is to give carers the opportunity to have some time off while the people they care for are looked after by the buddies, or if they prefer, do a little Christmas shopping themselves.
If you would like to come along and enjoy the friendly atmosphere and hassle free shopping, give the Volunteer Centre a ring on 01284 766126, they will book you a buddy or a lift into town.
