Are you moving within this council's area?

If you are moving within the St Edmundsbury area let us know the date you are moving, your new address and who is the owner of the property you are leaving. We will then calculate what you owe to the date you move and send you a bill for any balance. You may have paid too much in which case we will transfer that credit to the account for your new home, deduct it from the amount owing on your new home and send you a bill for the balance.

Are you moving into St Edmundsbury from another area?

If you are moving into our area, then let us know the date you are moving in, and your new address. We will send you a bill calculated from your moving date, together with details of how and where to pay, including a direct debit form.

In order to safeguard the security of your bank account, we cannot at this stage take instructions for direct debits over the internet, and you will need to sign a mandate in the usual way.

You will also need to remember to notify your previous council that you have moved out.

What happens if your new home needs doing up?

If you move into your new home and then do alterations or renovations, the Council Tax is payable on the current banding.

If you do not move into your new home you will not have to pay any council tax until six months after the date the property first became unoccupied and empty of furniture. After six months, if the property is still empty, you will have to pay the full charge.

However, if the property requires or is undergoing major repairs to make it fit to live in, then it may be that no Council Tax is payable whilst the work is being undertaken. Please contact us to see if you are able to receive this reduction in Council Tax.
