One of the main sources of asbestos is corrugated or flat sheets commonly sued for roofing for garages or sheds. These should remain untouched and if they are in good state of repair they do not represent a risk to health. Under no circumstances should the sheeting be drilled or scrapped; this will result in the release of fibres, that if inhaled could give rise to lung diseases in later life.
If you have to remove or handle broken or defective asbestos sheeting, then the following guidance should be referred to:
- Wear protective overclothing
- Water the sheeting well before handling, to dampen it down
- Try to keep the sheeting in one piece
- Wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth to prevent inhalation of fibres
- Wear gloves
To remove small amounts of sheeting from your domestic property, first double bag the sheet and then seal it. Contact Waste Management Services on (01284) 757320 and ask for further guidance. DO NOT take it to the local waste collection site or landfill site - you will not be allowed to leave it there.
Removal of asbestos material by contractors must be carried out by Licensed Contractors. Removal of asbestos by unlicensed contractors is an offence.
