House Extensions

3.28 It has become common practice for home owners to extend their dwellings rather than move to a larger property. Most extensions are acceptable provided that design and materials are appropriate and neighbours’ amenities are respected. However, badly designed and unsympathetic extensions, either singly or added up together, can have a bad effect on the character of a street or area and the amenities of those living nearby. Proposals will be expected to demonstrate that the development, design and impact are acceptable.

POLICY H6: ALTERATIONS OR EXTENSIONS TO DWELLINGS Link to Index of Policies

Planning permission for alterations or extensions to existing dwellings will be permitted provided that the proposals:

  • a) respect the character, scale and design of existing dwellings; and
  • b) will not result in over-development of the dwelling curtilage.
