Dealing with pollution incidents

Pollution incidents, which could lead to serious land contamination, need to be dealt with effectively and promptly to avoid harm to human health, property or the environment. Prevention should always be the first step. Advice is available from various organizations including those listed below on how to store chemicals or other potential contaminants to avoid pollution occurring.

Pollution incidents should be reported to the appropriate authority as soon as possible in order that effective action can be taken. The emergency services should be contacted where life or property is threatened.

For pollution incidents likely to affect rivers, lakes or groundwater - contact the Environment Agency on
08708 506 506.

For other incidents likely to lead to land contamination - contact Environmental Health and Housing Services on 01284 757053 (out-of-hours 01284 763252).
