Dealing with land contamination
|
Redevelopment of land provides the best opportunity to address land contamination. Changing the land use can add value to the land and also bring into use so called "derelict" or "brownfield" sites so that the developer, future site users and the local community can all benefit. The local planning authority, through its development control service, will be able to advise developers on how to proceed with a planning application, where such land is being considered for redevelopment.

Where no redevelopment is likely, the council now has statutory duties and powers to identify and securing land clean-up.Environmental Health and Housing Services is responsible for regulating contaminated land and fulfillng the council's requirements under Part IIA of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. In addition to our statutory duties, Environmental Health and Housing Services provide advice and respond to enquiries from the public as well as advising developers and the council's planning service with respect to applications for the development on/or close to potentially contaminated land.
