Food Hygiene and Food Safety

 

St Edmundsbury Borough Council is responsible for delivering food hygiene and food safety services which aim to protect people's health and their quality of life, within the borough.

These services include:

  • Inspection of food businesses and enforcement of food safety law (PDF 22.3Kb).
  • Provide advice to businesses on food safety management systems.
  • Investigating complaints about food that is sold or manufactured locally.
  • Following up complaints about food business.
  • Investigating cases and outbreaks of food poisoning and infectious disease.
  • Sampling food and drink from food businesses.
  • Checking foods that are imported from other countries to ensure they are safe to be eaten.
  • Registration (PDF 56.5Kb) of food businesses, a list of which is available to the public.
  • Responding to national food hazard warnings to ensure local businesses are aware and have removed suspect foods from sale.
  • Food hygiene training courses including the Foundation Certificate in Food Hygiene.
  • Food safety award schemes.
  • Promoting healthy lifestyles through various projects and initiatives.

Food hygiene and food safety services are provided by teams of Environmental Health Practitioners who are appropriately qualified and registered with the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.

Whether you are a member of the public, a food handler or the owner of a food business, you should expect a good quality of service from your local food and safety team.

To ensure the public receives a good quality service, the food hygiene and food safety work undertaken by your local council may be audited by the Food Standards Agency.
