Waste management and recycling

Welcome to the Waste and Recycling pages of the St Edmundsbury Borough Council website.

St Edmundsbury Borough Council is recognised as a high performer in recycling and in 2004/05 we were the first authority to break the 50 percent mark for recycling. Please see Recycling success for further details.

This is why WRAP (Waste Resources Action Programme) is working with us to participate in a kerbside battery collection trial. From August, residents of St Edmundsbury will be able to recycle their used or unwanted household batteries in a small bag which will be provided to householders shortly. The trial, which was approved by the council's Cabinet on the 14 February, is the first of its kind in the country and will run until March next year.

The borough council was approached to take part in the experiment by WRAP after the UK, along with other EU member states, was set a target to recycle 25 percent of portable batteries by September 2012. WRAP will be funding the scheme until September 2008.

Until the trial begins, residents can still take their old batteries to household waste recycling centres. The new collection trial will accept AAA, AA, C and D size batteries as well as button, mobile phone, laptop batteries and rechargeable batteries. The trial will not be able to collect car or similar automotive batteries and these should still be taken to the household waste recycling centre.
