The waste and recycling service, provided by St Edmundsbury Borough Council, is based on the use of wheeled refuse containers (wheeled bins).
Domestic, or residual waste, is the waste that cannot be recycled and currently is disposed of at a landfill site. It is collected in BLACK wheeled bins.
Kitchen and garden waste, which is sent for composting, is collected in BROWN wheeled bins.
Dry recyclable waste is collected in BLUE wheeled bins.
The standard size of domestic wheeled bin is 240 litres which has been proven to be the most effective size for the average family. If your family has six or more members you can apply for a larger bin of 360 litres in size. This will apply to the black and blue, but not the brown bin.
Properties which do not have any storage space or access to the street other than through the house, may be eligible for a sack collection. Each application for this type of collection service is considered on merit. Please contact the waste management office if you wish to discuss this option.
All wheeled bins should be presented for collection at the kerbside or, if this is not safe to do, they should be left at the edge of your property where they can be clearly seen by the collection crew. If you are elderly, infirm or disabled and therefore unable to move your bins to a collection point, a 'back door' collection service is available. Please contact the waste management office on 01284 757320 or 757316, alternatively email waste.management@stedsbc.gov.uk, to discuss eligibility for this service.
All domestic bins are provided free of charge by the council and they remain the property of the council. If you move house, do not take your wheeled bins with you - they will be provided at your new property if it is within the St Edmundsbury area. If you move out of the St Edmundsbury area, check with your new council regarding their method of collection.
Waste from commercial properties is collected in GREEN bins. Green bins may also be used in communal collection areas such as blocks of flats.
DAMAGED BINS
Periodically wheeled bins may split. If this has happened to one of your bins please telephone 01284 757320 or 757316, alternatively e-mail waste.management@stedsbc.gov.uk and report the damage. A new bin will be delivered as soon as it can be arranged.
