The West Front is the largest surviving part of the vast Benedictine Abbey of St Edmund. After Henry VIII's dissolution of the monastery's it fell to ruin with most of the facing stone plundered for re-use. In the mid 17th century a four storey timber framed house was built into the ruins, followed at various stages by other buildings for various purposes. The result is an extraordinary collection of building styles.
The recent project has been a pleasing success for the development team, Hawes & Southgate, working closely with St Edmundsbury Borough Council and R & J Hogg Ltd building contractors. The best building conservation principles have been applied, whilst providing five unique and 'well-appointed' houses, some of which have been rescued from a state of extreme dilapidation.
