The Blue Bin Recycling Scheme

Thanks to your support, St Edmundsbury and Forest Heath are among the best councils in the country for reducing and recycling waste.

We need to do even better to cut the amount of rubbish being buried in landfill sites - a practice which is both expensive in terms of actual cost and in damage to the environment.

To complete the recycling service brought to your doorstep, we have now introduced a blue bin collection. The blue bin is for 'dry' recyclable material - plastics, paper, cardboard and metal. For a full list please see Recycling at a glance or click on the image below.

The blue bin will be collected every other week, normally with your brown bin. This will be your recycling week. We will collect your black bin on alternate weeks.

The blue bin scheme has been introduced with a grant £2.049 million from Defra's £140 million Waste Minimisation and Recycling Fund.

The funding, shared between St Edmundsbury Borough Council and Forest Heath District Council, has been awarded because of our succesful track record in operating waste reduction and recycling schemes.

In 2002/03 both councils extended their brown bin scheme which collects and recycles garden and kitchen waste.

Dry recyclable material is collected and transported to a new transfer facility at Lackford. The material is then bulked up and further transported to a state of the art Materials reclamation facility (MRF), operated by Viridor Waste Management, at Great Blakenham.

At this site the materials are sorted and sold on to markets which then use the various products to manufacture other articles.
