St Edmundsbury Borough Council will be moving to new offices, shared with Suffolk County Council, at West Suffolk House, Western Way, Bury St Edmunds in January 2009. As the Borough Offices, on Angel Hill, will no longer be needed by the council we are looking to sell the building.
Compared to the other buildings lining Angel Hill the Borough Offices building is comparatively modern. It was designed by associated architects W H Mitchell of Naish and Mitchell and Basil Oliver in 1935, who also made changes to the Athenaeum and designed the signpost known as the ‘pillar of salt’ in the middle of Angel Hill. The building was formally opened on 9 April 1937.
The Georgian-style Borough Offices building replaced an older one which was burnt down. The rear of the building was added in the 1960s by the architect David Penistone, an employee of Bury St Edmunds Borough Council (which joined with other local authorities in the 1970s to form St Edmundsbury Borough Council).
The firm of Savills of Cambridge has been chosen to market the Borough Offices. The sale timetable is still under discussion but it is possible that marketing will start in July 2008. The council plans to contract with the selected purchaser before the end of the year and completion will follow in 2009 when vacant possession is available.
