Haverhill Big Day Out Compost Giveaway
As a thank you for your continued support of our brown bin, compostable waste scheme, St Edmundsbury Borough Council are giving away a limited amount of free compost on a first come first serve basis at the Haverhill Big Day Out on Wednesday 27th July at the Haverhill Recreation Ground.
The compost will be loose and so will require residents to shovel it themselves into sacks. The compost is the product of the green kitchen and garden waste collected through our scheme and residents will be required to bring their own sacks.
Compost Awareness Week, 1 to 8 May 2011
Offering home composting advice, Suffolk County Council are holding two events in our borough. A Master Composter clinic is taking place at the Bury St Edmund's library from 2-3pm on Wednesday 4th May with a static information display all week. The Master Composter advice clinic and activities will also be run on Sunday May 8th at the Lackford Lakes Nature Reserve.
Suffolk Spring Clean, 28 March to 11 April 2011
Although we support these event year round, for two weeks from the 28 March, we will be supporting the Greenest County's Suffolk Spring Clean. If your community would like to take part in a litter pick in your local area we will be able to supply sacks, picks, gloves and vests for each event. We also arrange for the bagged litter to be collected. If you would like to get involved please contact Waste Management on 01284 757320.
Recycle Week, 21 to 27 June 2010
This year Recycle Week is focusing on small electrical items, that means anything with a battery or plug: from broken toasters and kettles gathering dust in the loft, to old mobile phones in drawers and disused power tools cluttering up the garage, all can be re-used or recycled. Residents have the opportunity to win an eco kettle or iPod dock if they pledge to reuse and recycle their electricals at the Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill libraries and council offices. We will also be promoting the event on the Bury St Edmunds market place on 22 June from 12pm to 2pm.
Compost Awareness Week, 1 May 2010
As part of a nationwide series of events coordinated by the Compost Association to raise awareness of the benefits of home composting and peat free compost, free compost and advice will be given out on Saturday 1 May at Clare Castle Country Park from 9am to 2pm. Please bring your own sacks to put the compost in.
No Excuses Litter Campaign
Residents across St Edmundsbury are being encouraged to show their support for a new campaign designed to keep the borough clean, green and free from litter. The six-month “No Excuses” campaign sees St Edmundsbury Borough Council and Forest Heath District Council join forces to spread the message that there’s no justification for dropping any type of litter – no matter how small.
The campaign has begun by focusing on food and drink litter and will change each month to include chewing gum, littering from vehicles, fly tipping, dog mess and cigarette ends. Roadshows, posters and promotional items will be displayed and given to members of the public. We would like to respond to any activities to promote the campaign and we can also help in arranging litter picks. For more information please contact us.
Cllr Nigel Roman, Forest Heath District Councillor and chair of the Forest Heath and St Edmundsbury joint waste committee, said “This campaign is designed to remind everyone to dispose of their litter in the right way so that we can keep our streets and countryside clean and green for all to enjoy. We are fortunate to live in a beautiful, picturesque area and, with a little effort from the whole community, we can make sure it stays that way.”
Cllr Peter Stevens, portfolio holder for environment and street scene at St Edmundsbury and vice chair of the joint waste committee, said “We hope that this campaign will help raise awareness of the problems associated with different types of litter while encouraging everyone to keep the borough clean and tidy. There really are no excuses for dropping litter as it only takes a second to dispose of it properly, and doing so makes a big, big difference.”
The Big Tidy Up
If you would like to get involved all you need to do is contact us on 01284 757320 or log on at www.thebigtidyup.org to register. By registering Keep Britain Tidy will send tidy up kits containing tabard bibs, refuse sacks, a guide, posters to promote your clean up, badges, and stickers.
We would like to see whether businesses wish to get involved too. Local businesses can either arrange their own tidy ups or sponsor an event. For more information, please call 01284 757320.
Zero Waste Week
Shops and businesses in Clare stopped giving out plastic bags for more environmentally friendly alternatives in support of St Edmundsbury's Zero Waste Week. Local traders signed up to go plastic bag free and only gave out compostable paper bags or cotton bags to customers. The council challenged everyone in the borough to only use products that can be recycled, composted and reused to reduce the waste they throw into their black bins to nothing. The scheme was a great success.
