Recycle Week, 22 to 28 June 2009

This week, a nationwide series of events coordinated by Recycle Now to pledge an action to waste less is being carried out.

In St Edmundsbury we are running temporary Tetra Pak and textiles collections at Abbots Green Primary School. A mobile textiles swap shop will also be present in the Clare Castle Country Park Car Park on Friday 26 June from 11am to 4pm. Please only bring clean clothing in good condition on hangers, and a minimum of one item and a maximum of ten.

We have also offered all schools a brown bin collection to increase composting. For more information on Recycle Week, or if you would like to make a pledge, please visit Recycle Now.

Most charitable organisations also support the week with regards to the re-use of textiles, bric-a-brack, CDs and books etc. Some also have facilities for the recycling of ink jets/toners and mobile phones.

No Excuses, March to August 2009

Residents across St Edmundsbury are being encouraged to show their support for a new campaign designed to keep the borough clean, green and free from litter. The six-month “No Excuses” campaign sees St Edmundsbury Borough Council and Forest Heath District Council join forces to spread the message that there’s no justification for dropping any type of litter – no matter how small.

The campaign has begun by focussing on food and drink litter and will change each month to include chewing gum, littering from vehicles, fly tipping, dog mess and cigarette ends. Roadshows, posters and promotional items will be displayed and given to members of the public. We would like to respond to any activities to promote the camapign and we can also help in arranging litter picks. For more information please contact us.

Cllr Nigel Roman, Forest Heath District Councillor and chair of the Forest Heath and St Edmundsbury joint waste committee, said “This campaign is designed to remind everyone to dispose of their litter in the right way so that we can keep our streets and countryside clean and green for all to enjoy. We are fortunate to live in a beautiful, picturesque area and, with a little effort from the whole community, we can make sure it stays that way.”

Cllr Peter Stevens, portfolio holder for environment and street scene at St Edmundsbury and vice chair of the joint waste committee, said “We hope that this campaign will help raise awareness of the problems associated with different types of litter while encouraging everyone to keep the borough clean and tidy. There really are no excuses for dropping litter as it only takes a second to dispose of it properly, and doing so makes a big, big difference.”

Past events

The Big Tidy Up, 1 September 2008

In September 2008, Keep Britain Tidy launched England’s first ever Big Tidy Up - the country’s biggest ever clean up. St Edmundsbury Borough Council and Forest Heath District Council are encouraging as many people as possible to get involved.

We are encouraging individuals, groups, schools and businesses to carry out a clean up in their local area to help keep our borough clean. We will provide litter picks, sacks and hi-visibility jackets and will pick up the bags of rubbish after groups have finished.

If you would like to get involved all you need to do is contact us on 01284 757320 or log on at www.thebigtidyup.org to register. By registering Keep Britain Tidy will send tidy up kits containing tabard bibs, refuse sacks, a guide, posters to promote your clean up, badges, and stickers.

We would like to see whether businesses wish to get involved too. Local businesses can either arrange their own tidy ups or sponsor an event. For more information, please call 01284 757320.

The campaign launched on 1 September 2008 and we want to encourage as many people as possible to get involved.

Recycle Week  2 to 6 June 2008

Recycle week is organised and funded by the Waste and Resources Action Programme. The aim is to encourage people to recycle more household waste. This years theme was ' just one more thing we can recycle'.

World Environment Day  5 June 2008

World Environment Day takes place on 5 June every year with events organised all over the world to raise awareness of the need to care for the environment.

Please visit United Nations Environment Programme for more information.

Zero Waste Week, 10 to 17 March 2008

Shops and businesses in Clare stopped giving out plastic bags for more environmentally friendly alternatives in support of St Edmundsbury's Zero Waste Week. Local traders signed up to go plastic bag free and only gave out compostable paper bags or cotton bags to customers. The council challenged everyone in the borough to only use products that can be recycled, composted and reused to reduce the waste they throw into their black bins to nothing. The scheme was a great success.
