How to become a councillor
Elections for St Edmundsbury borough council are held every four years on the first Thursday in May. The next scheduled election for borough councillors is 7 May 2015.
By-elections
By-elections can occur at any time if a councillor resigns, dies or is no longer qualified to remain elected. Vacancies are advertised on our Forthcoming elections and referendums page and also in the polling area for the vacancy.
You can stand for election for your local council if you are:
- 18 or over;
- a British, Commonwealth, Irish or European Union citizen;
- registered to vote in the council’s area (or if you have lived or worked in the area for at least 12 months).
You cannot stand for election if you:
- are bankrupt;
- have been sentenced to three or more months in prison in the last five years;
- have been disqualified for corrupt and illegal practices;
- are an employee of the council, or if you hold a politically-restricted post in any council.
New councillors are given training so that they are fully aware of what their role involves and the responsibilities, rules and protocols surrounding it.
