National and regional policy documents

Below are some useful links to national and regional policy documents which guide the borough council’s own policies.

Regional Spatial Strategy  In May 2008 the East of England Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) was published by the Government. This RSS covers the period to 2021 but sets a vision, objectives and core strategy for the longer term for the region, including St Edmundsbury.

Planning Policy Statements  Planning Policy Guidance Notes (PPGs) and their replacements Planning Policy Statements (PPSs) are prepared by the government to explain statutory responsibilities and provide guidance to local authorities and others on planning policy and the planning system.

Suffolk Structure Plan The Structure Plan is a statement of strategic policies for the protection of the environment and the control of development to 2016. It provides a basis for investment decisions by local authorities, businesses and individuals, and for the plans and programmes of other organisations. However, many of the policies have now been superseded by the Regional Spatial Strategy.

Minerals and Waste Development Framework  The county council are responsible for all mineral and waste planning matters. Work has begun on replacing the Mineral and Waste Local Plans with the Minerals and Waste Development Framework. Consultation information can be viewed from this link.
