In recent years there has been a drop in the numbers of local family-operated funeral directors.
Few people notice that many family-run funeral directors throughout the country are now owned by large firms. They may not reveal the new owners on shop signs or letterheads.
These firms may continue trading based on the caring qualities and local connection of the old family firm.
Similarly, older people tend to reflect upon the past socialist principles of the 'Co-op' funeral service, which may no longer apply.
